Many Car Dealers Pull Out of the CASH FOR CLUNKERS Program

cars_rebate_programThey’re not getting reimbursed by the government. Ah, Government efficiency. Can’t wait to see what they’ll do with healthcare.

A car company made a friend of mine sign an agreement that if the government didn’t send them the money, that the customer would be responsible for the $4,500–which would be tacked onto the customer’s car loan.

Full story here, bits below.

In apparent violation of the new cash-for-clunkers law, the Department of Transportation is more than 10 days late in paying rebates of at least hundreds of thousands of dollars on dealer claims, several dealers said.

The clunkers law signed by President Barack Obama in June requires that dealers be reimbursed by the government within 10 days for $3,500 or $4,500 credits they’ve paid to customers.

Dealers are reporting that they can’t get responses to their claims, leaving them in limbo as to whether they’ve been approved or rejected, National Automobile Dealers Association spokesman Bailey Wood said.

Many also are getting rejections for procedural minutiae that they can’t straighten out because Transportation employees are inaccessible by phone or e-mail, he said.

Perhaps most significant, dealers aren’t getting paid in significant numbers,  Wood said.
