Family Meals Help Teens Avoid Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs

We attempt to have all three meals each day together as a family (my husband has an office in the home), but especially dinner! Here’s some more motivation for you:

FOXNews.com – Health – Family Meals Help Teens Avoid Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs: “Ten Benefits of Family Dinners

The survey notes 10 positive trends for teens who eat dinner often with their families:

1. Less likely to smoke cigarettes

2. Less likely to drink alcohol

3. Less likely to try marijuana

4. Less likely to have friends who use illicit drugs

5. Less likely to have friends who abuse prescription drugs

6. More likely to get mostly A’s and B’s at school

7. More likely to say they would confide in one or both parents about a serious problem

8. More likely to report that their parents are very proud of them

9. More likely to report lower levels of stress and tension at home

10. More likely to talk to their families during dinner and have the TV off during the meal.

Those findings come from comparing teens who have five or more family dinners per week with those who have three or fewer weekly family dinners.”
