On May 1, the Holy See released a statement (here and below) which said, “The serious and objectively immoral behavior of Fr. Maciel, supported by incontrovertible evidence, at times constitutes real crimes, and manifests a life devoid of scruples and of genuine religious feeling. The large majority of Legionaries were unaware of that life, particularly because of the system of relations created by Fr. Maciel, who had skillfully managed to build up an alibi, to gain the trust, confidence and surrounding silence and strengthen his role as a charismatic founder.”

Fr. Kearns said he didn’t know. Our Faith teaches us to believe people and to accept the apology. So, apology accepted.
I wonder how much Pope Benedict ‘s repealing their private vows (their “oath of charity” prevented members of the Legion–and evidently Regnum Christi–from offering any kind of criticism of superiors and their decisions by members) affected the investigations?

The result of Rome’s investigation (known as an “apostolic visitation”) into the Legionaries of Christ will result in either the dissolution or the re-founding of the order, according to sources close to the Legionaries in Spain.
The Legionnaires of Christ have a number of Latin American billionaires behind them (leading some to call them the “Millionaires of Christ”), so if they’re dissolved and have to hand everything over to the Vatican…well, we’re talkin’ about a lot ‘o mullah!
