It seems like “beauty pageants” and “modesty” don’t really go together, but kudos to this Catholic young lady for recognizing the need.
Danielle Doty was baptized, received her first Communion and was confirmed at St. Anthony Church. Her faith has given her the courage to face many challenges throughout her life, said her mother.
Danielle Doty said that she feels a responsibility to make the most of this blessing that the Lord has bestowed upon her. She feels called to help others, especially girls.
As Miss Teen USA, Doty will promote several charitable alliances, including Best Buddies, which assists people with intellectual disabilities; Sparrow Clubs USA, which assists children in a medical crisis; Girl Talk, a student-to-student mentoring program for middle-and-high-school age girls; Project Sunshine, which provides free educational, recreational and programs for children facing medical challenges and their families; and DARE, or Drug Abuse Resistance Education, which teaches school children how to live drug and violence-free lives.
Doty also plans to expand the charitable organization that she started called Modest is Hottest, which teaches girls about self-respect and self-esteem.
“I want girls to know that people will like you and you will have friends when you are comfortable in your own skin,” she said.

Well, this sounds like a step in the right direction. I’m just sorry that it’s a sliding scale with regard to modesty. I assume Miss Doty had to wear a swimsuit for part of the pageant contest. Other images of her (and even the one featured) show nudity from the shoulders to under her arms, short dresses, etc. It would really be amazing to see someone manage to be covered by objective standards of modesty AND do well in a pageant! Is anyone doing pageants for young Christian girls WITHOUT the bathing suit part? And with modesty requirements? Then the focus should be on comportment, charity, manners, speech and a special talent section .. along with pretty, modest clothes and light makeup and “real” hair!
I don’t think any such pageant exists, Lisa.
Well, I’ll attempt to come up with that soon. Don’t worry Lisa.
