These are interesting, and I see the 40s influence, but aren’t there any nice, modest, feminine styles we can wear everyday? I wouldn’t be caught dead in some of these. They are silly!

I wouldn’t be caught dead in them, either Paula! But I think runway styles are just for inspiration…AND to give our young ladies the proof they ‘need’ to realize that dressing modestly doesn’t always mean dressing frumpy.

So with the pics above, we see long graceful and flowing styles. Large shoulders. Double-breasted shirt-dresses. Let me look around for some ‘every day’ examples and I’ll post them!

The make up alone is enough to scare me! Egads!

For example, using the second pic above as inspiration, this Jones of New York dress will be available to order in September: http://demandware.edgesuite.net/aaca_prd/on/demandware.static/Sites-jonesny-Site/Sites-jonesny-catalog/default/v1249409898516/products/PG.10110179.JJG47XX.PD.jpg

And actually, I like the red Aquiliano Rimondi dress….and the Spiegel dress is a rip off of the Francesco Scognamiglio dress (minus the shoulder wings).

A lot of the stuff in J.Peterman’s catalog would work.

    Hey Colleen,

Actually, both the Jones and Spiegel would be a little low cut in the neckline for me. I thought it was 2 fingers or something like that. I have always found modest items at Talbots. You can actually click on 3/4 length arms etc.

  • Colleen Hammond August 5, 2009 at 4:38 am

Yes, Ruth, I see what you mean! http://jpeterman.com/category~cat~110201.asp

Jill, that’s why I provided the link to the Outfit Guidelines which give suggestions on how to make an outfit modest to fit the guidelines of 2-fingers below the collarbone. And I found Talbots online, but don’t see the “click on 3/4 length” option. Will you share a link with us, please? This is where I am: http://www1.talbots.com/talbotsonline/prodnav/viewall.aspx?pfid=1427&BID=&h=M&sk=M

By the way, for helping make a low-cut outfit more modest, this is the nicest camisole we’ve ever found: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006IXE7M?ie=UTF8&tag=collehammo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0006IXE7M

What’s so frustrating is that places like Talbot’s and J. Peterman are so expensive, espeically for families w/mom’s at home. What I’m praying for is a designer who makes modest dresses to work with a place like Kohl’s where it could be priced more affordable. The one from Speigel isn’t one I’d spend my day in doing dishes and laundray. I can’t find a modest 40′s inspired shirt dress for under $100… and that’s a dress that can be dressed up or down. Just my thoughts.. thanks for keeping this topic on the front burner. May Our Blessed Mother bless our efforts!

I’m sorry I meant the Jones dress… Speigel would work better.. short sleeves would be nice!

Beautiful dresses but they are are extraordinary and unrealistic. It is so great to see the more modest styles… they not only look elegant… but will make you feel as beautiful and elegant. I think these styles can be modifed and look FABULOUS if toned down a little.
We need to remember that the models wearing the dresses also make the look a lot more extravagant. Colleen, we need a “Dressing with Dignity” clothing store!!…one that would catch the eyes of every womon as she walks by and views the beauty of elegance through modesty on the dressed mannequins she sees in the window! You wear clothing that makes you look elegant…..you will find yourself feeling and acting just as elegant. We are Women and Our Creator designed us to be different….we need to dress the part!

Keep up the GREAT work Colleen… know that you are not alone. You not only have many people with you on this…. but the Good Lord is helping you with this…It is His plan being worked through you. Thank you for your YES!

    Sheila

ps, I loved your book. I just read it a couple weeks ago and have bought more since to give to others….. we need to get the message out there!
