What Pope Pius VII Said About Book Burning

In light of the canceled book burning in Florida…

He said it, not me. But I’m sure he didn’t he mean publicity stunts…?

DIU SATIS

Pope Pius VII

ON A RETURN TO GOSPEL PRINCIPLES

ENCYCLICAL OF POPE PIUS VII

15. Books which openly oppose the teaching of Christ are to be burned. Even more importantly, the eyes and minds of all must be kept from books, which do so more stealthily and deceitfully. To recognize such books, as St. Cyprian says in On the Unity of the Church, “there is not need of a long treatise and arguments: The sum of truth is a proof easy for faith: the Lord says to Peter, ‘feed my sheep.’” So the sheep of Christ should consider safe and eat cheerfully the food to which Peter’s voice and authority directs them; but despite any beauty and charm, they should shun as harmful and plague-ridden, what this voice forbids them. Those who do not comply are certainly not to be counted among the sheep of Christ.

  1. The things that make you go, “hmmm.”

  2. His opinion on the current situation might be a little different given the times we live. He might not think it prudent to stage a very public burning of books that would be seen all over the world thanks t…o media and technology. The pastors purpose for burning the books isn’t the same as the Pope’s purpose either. Plus, there is that little detail that the Pastor is protestant, not Catholic, and the Pope would probably burn most of the Pastors books. In the end, I think the Pope would decide it wasn’t a good idea- and burn the books in private.See More

  3. It seems me that the Pope would have been referring to privately burning the bad books. There’s no reason to make a spectacle out of it. And in fact, public book burnings seem more province of those of the Protestant persuasion, in general.
