The quality of the artistry is uncontested. It’s interesting that this should be on your site now because on a traditional Catholic forum at the moment there is an ongoing debate about the intent of Michelangelo’s depiction of nude characters, the fact that several pope’s denounced the nudity (and apparently there are some questionable scenes depicted as well), and had certain areas covered with fig leaves and also the origin of nude pictures in general.
For example, the art work of the Renaissance borrows heavily from the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans who were pagans and fairly obsessed with nude figures.
Why are the saints always fully clothed, then, if there’s nothing wrong with nudity? Or is okay just when you are depicted those characters who are of a fallen nature?
It’s an interesting question, I think.
God Bless,
Lisa
