Whoa, what’s going on here?
A local Muslim group in Indonesia has threatened “non-peaceful action” against Catholics building a chapel on private property.
It seems that the parish priest, Father Siswaya, is well within his legal rights as the Muslim group isn’t even registered in their district. Therefore, the Muslim group isn’t even legally recognized, thus giving them no legal recourse. But since the Muslim group has already threatened non-peaceful action against the Catholics…
Prayers for this priest and his parishioners would probably be gratefully appreciated!
“Sixty local people and 90 local Catholics have given their approval for the building of the chapel. Sleman district’s Religious Affairs Department gave us its approval on Aug. 5, and the village and subdistrict heads also have given their approval,” (the parish priest) explained. These requirements are in line with Joint Regulation No. 9/2006 and No. 8/2006, signed by Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni and Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Ma’aruf on March 21. This revised the controversial 1969 joint decree regulating the establishment of worship places.
Father Siswaya pointed out that the Muslim forum had not yet registered itself with the Court of Justice of Sleman district. Every organization has to register itself with the court to be legal.
