“O Christian mothers, if you knew what a future of anxieties and perils, of ill-guarded shame you prepare for your sons and daughters, imprudently getting them accustomed to live scantily dressed and making them lose the sense of modesty, you would be ashamed of yourselves and you would dread the harm you are making of yourselves, the harm which you are causing these children, whom Heaven has entrusted to you to be brought up as Christians.”
Pius XII to Catholic Young Women’s Groups of Italy

“One can not sufficiently deplore the blindness of so many women of every age and station. Made foolish by a desire to please, they do not see to what degree the indecency of their clothing shocks every honest man and offends God. Most of them would formerly have blushed for such apparel as for a grave fault against Christian modesty. Now it does not suffice to exhibit themselves on public thoroughfares; they do not fear to cross the threshold of churches, to assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and even to bear the seducing food of shameful passions to the Eucharistic Table, where one receives the Heavenly Author of Purity.”
    Pope Benedict XV

Colleen, the year women’s pants made their unwelcome debut on Paris runways, a Polish boy named Karol Woytyla made his debut in this world; we know him better as Blessed John Paul II. Also, Pope Benedict XV made his much-needed statement about midway between the pants on Paris runways and his expiration the next year.

Sadly, the last time I was in a dressing room at a department store, I saw a horribly immodest outfit not just being allowed by a mother but PUSHED on a teenage daughter by her mother. It made me ill. I told the story to a friend who then swapped a similar story.

I can share a similar story too, Suzanne.

I do a lot of modest fashion shows around the country, and one young lady wasn’t comfortable in an outfit because she felt “exposed”. I said she didn’t have to go out, and her mother pushed her out anyway and said “get over it!” I was horrified!

Colleen, what you experienced was horrifying. In fact, if I saw what you did, I would’ve called the cops on the mother. Also, where was the father?! I would not let, let alone make, my daughter do what that mother made her daughter do.

      • Dwayne January 4, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Colleen, where was the husband of this disgrace to the female sex who treated her daughter so poorly? Like I told Suzanne, I wouldn’t let, let alone make, my daughters dress like that, and if my wife tried to push that, I’d stop her.

    • Dwayne January 4, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Suzanne, what you said about a mother FORCING her daughter to wear an immodest outfit prompted me to write. If my wife pulled such nonsense, she’d be sleeping on the couch, and I’d make sure my daughters’ outfits were modest if I had to make every clothing decision myself. Also, I have a sister a year my junior, and our mother(such a promoter of pants on females she acts like females should not have the right to only, or even mostly, wear skirts and dresses, and has called ME sexist because I loathe it when females wear anything other than dresses and skirts) is livid over the fact that one of her daughters hates wearing pants.

” Children should not be wearing fashion styles meant for adult women. Period.”

Neither should adult women, more often than not.

I love the Papal quotes. Thank you for sharing them. As for mothers pushing those clothes on their daughters, not only does it show the most tragic blindness regarding the real good for their children but the same complete misunderstanding of love which is such a plague today. I am both disgusted by the terrible future they are condemning their children to and their attempt, unaware as it probably is, to eradicate the natural sense of modesty in their own children. So many poor women out their who don’t have a clue how to be loved.
