Rampant sexuality was something men were supposed to grow out of: in medieval political theory, young male bodies were used as symbols of badly run kingdoms. A man who indulged in excessive eating, drinking, sleeping or sex — who failed to “rule himself” — was considered unfit to rule his household, much less a polity.

Is BYU’s Premarital Sex Controversy Good For College Sports?

Because he engaged in pre-marital sex with his girlfriend, starting center Brandon Davies was kicked off of Bringham Young University’s basketball team for the rest of the season. Ranked 3rd in the country, BYU will miss their star center and may not advance in the NCAA tournament. Some may say it’s not fair to the rest of the team. But I applaud BYU and their honor code for sticking to their principles. Davies, we all hope, will learn from this and become a better man for it.

Thoughts on a New Knighthood

I’m also going to skip telling you how talented you are. You already know that. You wouldn’t be here if you weren’t. What you’ll discover as you get older is that the world has plenty of very talented failures – people who either didn’t live up to their abilities; or who did, but did it in a way that diminished their humanity and their character. We already have too many clever leaders. We need wise leaders. And the wisest leaders ground themselves in humility before God and the demands of God’s justice.
