Building a Capsule Wardrobe, Part 1:
Lifestyle Analysis

I first heard of a Capsule Wardrobe when I was having a glass of wine with my girlfriend. She said she was building a Capsule Wardrobe, and I thought it was part of some school rocket science project she was working on with her boys.

Once she explained the concept, I knew I had to do it, too.

But she couldn’t give me details on exactly what to do and how to do it. How many of each piece? What core pieces? How to adjust for seasons? What colors, styles, etc…? How does it vary depending on where you live? What you do for a living? How old you are? Coloring (your hair, eyes, and skin)? What colors to use to make an impact? Etc…

That night, I went home and stood in front of my walk-in closet — which could no longer be walked into.

I knew I needed help. So I went to Google and typed in, “How to build a capsule wardrobe” and received over 220,000 results!

And I began to read.

The Project Manager side of me wanted a step by step process to building my own, personal, useful Capsule Wardrobe. But although everyone had their own idea, I wasn’t finding what I wanted — or frankly, what I needed. The recommendation to, “Pare down your closet to 37 pieces for three months, then see what you need” didn’t tell me what 37 pieces I needed! Or there were suggestions for what to put in your Capsule Wardrobe didn’t fit my lifestyle or dressing personality.

So I researched everything in minute detail and came up with my own process — so now you don’t have to!

Why Build a Capsule Wardrobe?

Most of us have too much “stuff”. We suffer from STUFF-A-CATION!

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, women will spend (on average) $3,400.00 per year on clothing and apparel — that’s $283.00 a month.

But statistics also show that we only wear 10% to 20% of what’s in our closets. And even we only wear 20% of what we own, that means we waste $2,700.00 per year buying clothing we don’t wear.

That’s over $226 a month wasted!

What’s in your closet?

I’m going to teach you a step-by-step process of building  a Capsule Wardrobe and that will help you:

  • Save money: You are going to pick and choose exactly what clothing items to invest in, and you won’t waste money on emotional or impulse purchases ever again!
  • Save time. You’re going to know what to wear everyday. (And you’re going to spend less time shopping as well.)
  • Reduce your stress level. You’re not going to stand in front of your closet and say, “I don’t have a thing to wear” ever again! And frankly, you’ll have less laundry or dry cleaning to do, too.

So let’s dive in!

Step 1: Lifestyle Analysis

The Capsule Wardrobe portion of the Style Academy goes over this in detail, but I’m going to tell you the basics here.

I want you to think about what you do in your daily, weekly, and monthly life.

Do you spend most of your time in casual situations? At home? In business situations? Sporting activities? Outdoor work? Or formal events?

Your homework for this week is to grab a calendar and block out times: what you do on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

In Part 2, we’re going to dig into your closet and see if your actual lifestyle activities match up to what’s in your closet — and I’ll explain exactly what to do with these results!

And in Part 3, I’ll teach you the 7 Style Personalities.

And make sure you know the Top 10 Fashion & Style Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)!!!!!
