Why I Dress Modestly
My modesty journey really started in July 2006. Up to that point, the mere thought of wearing a skirt – not to mention a full length one – was appalling to me; I was a t-shirt and shorts type of girl. I would wear skirts to Mass (a rule in my family) and to any special occasion, but no other times. I had always been raised to dress modest in the sense of wearing nothing tight, low cut, too short, etc.
In 2006, at the Miles Jesu Catholic Girls Camp, God opened my eyes to the beauty of not only dressing modestly, but dressing femininely. I saw girls running, playing sports, canoeing, and more… all in skirts! So, as my mind was rethinking my wardrobe, I arrived home and went directly to the Catholic Family Conference in Anaheim, CA with my family. God truly works in mysterious ways: that day, in the Teen Room, they were handing out Colleen Hammond’s book entitled, Dressing with Dignity. I took it home, read it, and immediately requested my mom to buy us some long skirts. That book has been a real blessing to me.
Since then, I have become more skirt savvy, own a fairly large wardrobe of long skirts, and a collection of modesty books. I know understand the responsibility we ladies have to our brothers in Christ, to not be an occasion of sin to them; and the glory we bring to God through modesty.
Living in the freezing winters of the northern Midwest, I still love my sweat pants and jeans. Yet that does not stop me from wearing skirts – I have found leggings and socks to be a great asset!
Through my modesty journey, I have had many people besides my Mom to help me – whether they were aware of it or not – namely Clair Halbur, Amanda Dominick, and (of course) Our Blessed Mother, Mary. Their example of feminine modesty has always been inspiring to me.

I just finished your book Dressing with Dignity. I loved it. I agree with this young girls comments. We have a great responsibility as women in how we dress.
Wow! I’m on Colleen Hammond’s blog!
I’m so glad I could be a witness to modesty. Thanks for using my story.
God bless!
Thank YOU for your story, Vicki! It has inspired many. GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!!
Vicki,
I could not believe it when I read your post! I had almost the same experience! It all started with a girls camp the summer of 2005 and seeing girls hiking and playing sports in skirts. I came home and announced that I wanted to experiment with wearing only skirts. It was that same summer that I discovered Dressing with Dignity! I couldn’t be happier with my decision to wear skirts all the time. In fact, when my husband and I met almost two years later, we found that we had both read Dressing with Dignity, twice!
God Bless you Vicki and Colleen!
Thank you Colleen Hammond your book also made me understand modesty! I like Viki only wore skirts to church(I am Byzantine catholic!). On my twelfth b-day I got your book as a gift from my godmother. (Oh and Viki and I are good friends!)
