What Are Our 3 Obstacles to God?

We will meditate today upon three obstacles which prevent the word of God from producing fruit in the soul. Our Lord has pointed them out to us in the three kinds of ground where the seed falls. The first obstacle is worldliness, figured by the beaten road, open to all passers-by; the second is cowardice, figured by the inert, stony ground, which does not allow vegetation to take root; the third is attachments, figured by the stones which cover the earth. We will then make the resolution: first, throughout the day to preserve a spirit of more than ordinary recollection, in order to profit by the good sentiments which the Spirit of God may suggest to us; second, not to refuse any sacrifice to grace. Our spiritual nosegay shall be the words of the Apostle: “The earth that drinketh in the rain which cometh often upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is tilled, receiveth blessing from God; but that which bringeth forth thorns and briars is reprobate, and very near unto a curse.” (Heb. 6:7-8)

Meditation: The Duty, Honor, and Glory of the Service of God

Friday after Septuagesima

Summary of Today’s Meditation

We will resume today, in three words, our meditations of this week; to be wholly God’s is a duty, a glory, and a happiness. We will then make the resolution: first, to sacrifice to God the slightest attachments we are able to perceive in ourselves; second, often to repeat as an ejaculatory prayer: All to God alone, all for God alone. Our spiritual nosegay shall be the words of the Psalmist: “What have I in heaven? And besides Thee what do I desire upon earth? For Thee my flesh and my heart hath Read the rest

How we must make use of Creatures for the Service of God

Summary of Today’s Meditation

We will today consider in our meditation how we must serve God by the use of creatures, and we shall see how, in order to do so, we must use: first, things which are necessary to life; second, things which are not necessary. We will then make the resolution: first, to look upon all that happens to us and all that we have to do only as means for sanctifying ourselves; second, to desire nothing upon earth except the good pleasure of God, and in everything to prefer that which best leads us to our end, … Read the rest

All Creation Invites us to Serve God

We resume today our meditations on the service of God, and we shall see: first, that all creatures invite us to serve God; second, that they offer us means for doing so. We will then make the resolution: first, not to please ourselves in creatures, but only in God, whom we must see in everything; second, that we must make use of all events here below as of so many steps to raise us to God by the adoration and love of His providence, of His wisdom, of His patience, of His goodness. Our spiritual nosegay shall be this saying of the saints: “How will that serve me for God, and for eternity?”
